Tasked with redesigning the social areas for LinkedIn Chicago HQ’s fifth floor, we drew inspiration from the natural marvels of Chicago’s landscape.

Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary is a small stretch of low-lying bushes and small trees, and has become a magnet for migrating songbirds and rarities. Some say that the hedge seems to bring birds in like magic, hence the spot’s nickname, “The Magic Hedge”.

I designed a mural to represent the Magic Hedge, as well as speak to the activities integral to this space. The LinkedIn team described this social area as a touching down point for employees. The mural becomes more tightly packed and colorful in the densest area of the space. Birds and flowers overlap endlessly in an energetic, collage-like way. As the mural stretches outwards, color drops off and a delicate line work remains.

The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is another surreal Chicago landmark–this hidden garden in the heart of the city features a beautiful stone walkway that encircles the lily pond. I worked closely with our vendor, Artaic, and learned their Tylist software to design this custom mosaic mural that becomes a backdrop for the fifth-floor communal social area.
